Diane Ravitch is a well-credentialed education historian and was the assistant secretary of education in the George W. Bush administration. In her book “Reign of Error,” Ravitch documents why the accelerating privatization of education is destroying a public education system that – contrary to conventional wisdom – is doing better work than it ever has.
Nearly 100 people have joined a local discussion of Ravitch’s book and its implications for our community. The discussion is taking place in 3 parts. Here is a report on the first, which took place Jan. 21. It’s written by Jan Resseger, a Heights-based blogger and advocate for public education.
Promptly at 7 o’clock last evening, 97 people arrived at the social room of Cleveland Heights High School to discuss Diane Ravitch’s book, Reign of Error. Last evening launched a three part, three week conversation. Parents joined members of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School Board and Cleveland Heights City Council, school administrators and teachers from Cleveland Heights and surrounding communities, and interested citizens from several communities including young professionals, retirees, and one student from Cleveland Heights High School.
