International Day of Women: It’s Today! March 8th

Tiffany Laufer · March 8, 2012 · Leave a Comment

Poster for Women's Day, March 8, 1914. Claming voting right for women.

Just a short while ago a woman was unable to vote.  The 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed in 1920 (ratified August 18th).  Can you really imagine that time? I doubt it, at least for the younger readers.   Can you imagine someone telling you NO! your opinion, your thought does not matter.

Today is International Day of Women, initially called International Working Women’s Day.  The first national Women’s Day in the United States was observed on 28 February 1909 following a declaration by the Socialist Party of America.

The United Nations theme for International Women’s Day 2012 is: Empower Women – End Hunger and Poverty

Amazingly enough, this day is an official holiday in Afghanistan, Angola, Armenia, Azerbijan, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, China* (for women only), Cuba, Georgia, Guinea-Bissau, Eritrea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macedonia*, Madagascar*, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nepal*, Russia, Tajikstan, Turkmenistan Uganda, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Zambia.

But not in the United States amongst others….But you can show your support this day by giving a high five, a hug or smile to the women in your life.  Today, enjoy all the blessings we have and take courage in the goals and struggles ahead to bring all the women of the world equality in law, health and career.
