Cleveland Int’l Film Festival Opener “Hamill”

Jim Simler · March 8, 2011 · Leave a Comment

The Cleveland International Film Festival is just about 2 weeks away and I can’t wait already. This year, the festival takes over all the theaters in Tower City, so it will be bigger than ever.  As recently as 10 years ago, they only showed a measly three films at a time. Now viewers have a choice of 8 unique films!  How do you do it? This isn’t a smorgasbord where you sample a little of everything. You make your choice Darn it.

If you don’t want the drama of making selections, consider the opening film, “Hamill”. It tells of a deaf wrestler from Loveland, Ohio who struggles with trying to fit in. Not until he attends college at the Rochester Institute of Technology where he begin to interact with other hearing impaired students does he begin to bloom.

While this storyline is not new, it is from first time film director Oren Kaplan who is already a Youtube sensation. I saw the trailor and I must say, it holds promise. Kaplan was raised in Israel and California and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from UCLA.

The opening film is considered a  fundraiser so there is a reception where attendees have the opportunity to meet both Kaplan, Matt Hamill and the actor playing him. Cost is $125 ($100 for members).

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, March 11, at 11 a.m. FutureHeights members can receive $2 off the price of each film ticket by using the discount code FTRHTS when ordering. Call 1-877-304-FILM or head to the the Ulmer & Berne Film Festival Box Office in the lobby of Tower City Cinemas.
